Q: I have heard about a test that helps with determining if I have Food allergies that might be causing problems with my FMS, IBS, and related.  What is it called and how do I have it done?

A:   It is called the ALCAT Food Allergy Test, and AMTL Corporation is the company that does the testing.  They do not file claims for Medicare/Medicaid, however, they offer a 25% discount to Medicare/Medicaid participants. To get the discount, enclose a copy of your card (s) when sending off your test materials. To have the ALCAT test performed, they can refer you to a physician in your area (please call ATML for a list).  If a referral physician is not available, you can always visit your regular physician, visit a local lab (for the blood draw, you should have the " kit" before going) or ATML has a mobile lab service (they come to your home or office to draw your sample; you would need to order the kit as they do not provide one). The information on the ALCAT Test is $18.95, but Medicare/Medicaid participants can ask for a $15.00 credit voucher so you are actually only paying $3.95 shipping and handling. The information package includes a complete information folder (info on the test), a video, and the mailer "kit" you need to have to get the test performed (The "kit" includes vials, paperwork and prepaid overnight lab bag to return your specimen to our lab). If you would like a brochure sent to you, please contact Charlene Wright in Account Services with your address.  She is available M-F, 9-5, at 1-800- 881-2685 or you can e-mail her at AlcatTest@aol.com .

Webmaster's Note: from personal experience, be sure to know what test you want ordered, they have several "sizes" that range from 100 allergens to 300+ allergens.  Each test represents a price increase, and also needs more vials filled in order to perform the test.  If memory serves, a 200 Allergen test used 4 or 5 rather large vials, which could make someone rather dizzy after it is drawn.  You should get a copy of a detailed test result, this could be from your doctor, or you might have to pay extra to get it.  The detailed report is extremely helpful in adjusting your diet to avoid food allergens that you may be consuming regularly.  So be sure to get this report.  Some Health Plans will not cover this test which could be several hundred dollars, so don't be shocked if you have to pay 100% out of pocket.
