Q: Why does it seem that people with FMS crave sweets, carbohydrates, and starchy foods?

A:   There is no theory out there that adequately describes why we crave these "sugary" foods.  It has long been held in the medical community that people suffering from FMS and related disorders should abstain from eating sugars, carbohydrates, and starches because it is believed that these foods will actually trigger pain, along with the dietary "side-effect" of possible weight gain (which can also create problems with FMS and health in general).  Many FMS patients have gone on low-carbohydrate diets and have noticed weight loss, discontinuation of cravings, and a noticeable decrease in pain.  However, a recent study named a specific medical grade sugar that apparently was shown to be a natural pain killer in babies.  The theory is that it may be possible to use this sugar in low doses to help in pain management as it is turned into a natural pain killer similar in effect to morphine.  This study was the first of its kind and was very specific, so further study will have to be done to determine what the extent can be.  It is possible that our bodies crave sweets and carbs to help make this natural morphine to deal with the pain.  In conclusion: no one is sure why we crave sweets, carbohydrates, and starchy foods.   Stay tuned.
